What began as a small project, organized by ALTEX Mexico, is now shaping up to become a large community event. On April 26, 2013 the first annual Feria de la Salud, hosted by ALTEX will bring together 16 different institutions, and include employees from 17 different plants, to provide workers and the community with health information and guidance.
ALTEX Nogales participates with a local training center hosted by the Mexican Social Security Institute (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social — IMMS) and was honored to be asked to host this inaugural event. The IMMS is a governmental organization that assists public health, pensions and social security in Mexico operating under the Secretariat of Health (Secretaría de Salud).
The goal of the health fair is to communicate to employees what services they have access to and to help them take advantage of time, eliminating long waiting periods for services and unnecessary permits to leave work during business hours. In addition to basic health information, other city department partners like water and energy, the Red Cross, diabetes association and the fire department will host information booths as well.
Many of ALTEX’s personnel attend workshops at the training center and take computer classes and participate in three-month-long health and fitness programs — just a sampling of the many classes offered. (See photo right.) Currently, a fitness trainer is onsite at the ALTEX facility three times a week to promote healthy exercise.
In addition, ALTEX employees have a great sense of community involvement and in late 2012 participated in an event to help local cancer victims. For every 1000 plastic caps collected, a free chemotherapy session would be given to a cancer patient. The ALTEX team donated over 70,000 caps — over 20,000 more than the nearest competitor. Recently, one of their own passed a way from breast cancer and the organization that they had helped by collecting caps, returned the favor in kind and donated funds to help with funeral costs.
ALTEX Nogales continues to be involved and an integral partner in the local community partnerships, and is proud to provide the hosting site for the upcoming health fair.
